South Lake Newsletter - September 18, 2020

news

Happy Friday Sharks,

Hybrid in-person instruction will begin September 24th, assuming the county’s COVID-19 rates continue to trend in a positive direction. We are very excited to welcome our students on campus and have been working to create the safest environment possible for everyone’s return. Please make sure to stay up-to-date with the most recent COVID-19 Resources at https://iusd.org/covid-19-resource-page. Also, please review this information with your student. We will be reviewing this with students as well, but it helps to see and hear it many times.

Cohort Assignment Change

If your family has a compelling reason for wanting to change your Cohort assignment please fill out this FORM and we will evaluate your request. Please know that we have balanced our classes using this alpha split which will make these accommodations rather challenging to accomplish.

Safety Precautions

As we continue to formalize our plans and monitor directives from the California Department of Public Health and the Orange County Health Care Agency, please read what you can expect when in-person classes return, as well as some steps you and your family can take to help keep our community healthy.  We will be reviewing these expectations with students in Homeroom on September 23rd. All students are required to review this prior to the start of in-person learning. Some reminders:

Masks/Face Coverings All students and staff are required to wear a mask/face covering at school.

Social Distancing We have arranged classroom furniture to accommodate social distancing or provided tri-fold dividers in smaller areas or for classrooms with tables. Students will not be permitted to share materials and will be assigned seats in the classroom.

Sanitizing All our classrooms have be fitted with hand sanitizer dispensers and wipes. Students will be able to wipe down their desk or table space before leaving class and upon arrival. Students will be encouraged to wash their hands throughout the day as well.

Movement on Campus Students will be taught the movement pathways on campus. All our students are expected to enter the building/classroom from the outside doors and exit from the inside doors so there is no overlap of students. All hallways and areas are marked with arrows and signs.

Break/Lunch Students are encouraged to bring their snack/lunch from home as much as possible. We will have all students out for Break spread out around the lunch tables, black top and outside the 100 and 200 wings. We will have separate lunch periods for 7th and 8th grade. 7th graders will be move to class 4 minutes before the bell rings releasing the 8th graders from class to lunch. This will eliminate any cross over traffic.

Cafeteria The cafeteria will be open for breakfast, snack and lunch and are strongly encouraging families to use MySchoolBucks rather than cash as we WILL NOT be providing change. All left over cash will be loaded into your student’s account. Please see Nutrition Services Webpage for more information. Breakfast and lunch pick up for families not attending school will be daily from 7am to 8am outside.

Health Office The Health Office will be used for all non-symptomatic health needs. We have identified an outside triage area to screen students exhibiting symptoms. We have also secured an illness room, eliminating the need to use any other room on campus for a potentially infected person.

Chromebooks All students that have not yet checked out a Chromebook will be issued a South Lake Chromebook upon their return during Homeroom. Students will be required, starting next week, to bring their charged Chromebook to use when at school.

To hear more about South Lake’s Re-Opening Plan and Guidelines, we invite you to attend a Re-Opening Guidelines Parent Information Night with Mrs. Averill.

Parent Expectations – Health Screening
We are encouraging each of you to discuss with your child what their return to school will look like, along with some of the ways we’re working together to keep one another safe. Use this Daily Home Screening for Students.pdf  on a daily basis with your child. Please reinforce the importance of hand-washing, physical distancing and face coverings at all times. Let your child know that they will not be able to play lunch time sports, share equipment, and to go home right after school. If your child has any underlying health issues, please schedule an appointment with your pediatrician to talk about risk factors for vulnerable children. If a member of your household tests positive for COVID-19, please keep your child at home and contact your school for guidance. Finally, if your child has any symptoms associated with the coronavirus, make sure they stay home and get tested if necessary.  Keep children home when they are sick.

We’re all in this together and we appreciate your partnership and support. We are relying on our partnership to share this important information with your student.

Be well,

Belinda Averill

Principal

Farewell to Mr. Lin

Mr. Lin, our 7th and 8th grade history teacher, has accepted a position at Woodbridge High School teaching World History and World Religion starting next week. For the past eight years he has been an invaluable member and leader of our staff and school. We will miss him dearly but know that he will continue to positively impact our community up the street. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Ly back to South Lake after her brief stint at Irvine Virtual Academy. She will be replacing Mr. Lin and is excited to be back with our Shark family for her 6th year here at South Lake.

PTSA Announcement

PTSA is hosting Restaurant Night at PIADINA at Crossroads today. Twenty percent of all proceeds go to South Lake Middle School so head over there for dinner!

Attendance

We want to remind you that we attendance for Homeroom on Mondays is Mandatory. We are seeing a decline in attendance and want to remind you of how important it is for your student to attend. We will be taking attendance daily for all students, both in person and on line. Your student will be required to follow the same schedule at home as they do at school. The only exception will be Homeroom for students working on line Tuesday – Friday. They will not need to log in during that time.

Technology Issues

As we return to in person instruction, your student’s teacher will NOT be able to troubleshoot issues with technology for students at home while they are teaching. We strongly recommend you call the front office or submit a request to helpdesk@iusd.org. Please don’t wait the entire day to hear back from your teacher.

Office Hours

Our teachers are inviting students that need re-teaching or intervention to attend their office hours on Mondays. However, we need your help reminding your student to attend. Also, as we transition to in person learning, the best time for your student to reach their teacher when working from home will be during Office Hours BEFORE school. Again, they will not be able to respond to student messages throughout the day as they will be teaching live.
