Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

Progress Reports are now available through Parent Portal on Aeries. For this first Progress Report our teachers input grades to communicate how your child is learning at the moment. Please make sure to review Work Habits and Citizenship marks as these are vital in indicating how your child is making progress in developing positive behaviors and habits this year.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Our students, staff and families are joining other IUSD schools to continue to raise awareness and support kind and respectful school cultures. Below are five facts about bullying prevention on our campus.

Bullying is preventable. Everyone has a role to play in preventing bullying. Effective bullying prevention approaches the problem from many angles and involves staff, students and families in creating a culture of respect. We help educate students about this important topic, including how to seek help, encourage them to engage in kindness, create opportunities for social connectedness and stand up for others. To learn what you can do at home, visit stopbullying.gov for more information.

We promote positive behaviors and welcoming school communities. Under the structure of the Multi-Tiered System of Support, IUSD schools implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, also known as PBIS, which establishes student expectations for the learning and teaching environment, social culture and campus norms. PBIS helps us support students by educating, preventing and/or addressing behaviors such as bullying and encourages a culture of respect and kindness. At South Lake, we teach South Lake Cares: Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, Take Care of our School. Every month we recognize students exhibiting specific South Lake Cares behaviors through our Shark of the Month and daily with Shark Cards that students spend at our Shark Shoppe. All month our PBIS team are promoting kindness and positive mental health during lunchtime activities and Homeroom.

Our schools offer a variety of social-emotional supports to prevent and address bullying. Our school staff, including teachers, mental health team members, counselors, nurses, administrators and other staff are here to listen, help and support our students. All students have been shown where and how to reach out to a counselor for support.

IUSD schools promote positive digital citizenship and the appropriate use of social media. We teach lessons through our curriculum that provides information and resources for students around positive digital citizenship and inclusive language. To learn more about K-12 digital citizenship in IUSD, please visit our K-12 Digital Citizenship in IUSD information resource. Included in this resource is a digital citizenship presentation for parents

We encourage students to say something. We want all students to know they are not alone and their voice matters, so please speak up, we care. Our school staff strives to create positive relationships with students so they have a trusted adult they can share their concerns. Additionally, IUSD’s Say Something Anonymous Reporting System enables students to seek support anonymously for themselves or friends.

For comprehensive information about bullying, cyber-bullying and IUSD actions, visit the Bullying Prevention webpage. For mental health and other supports, visit the Mental Health and Wellness and Counseling web pages.

Next Thursday is the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill. We will be practicing our duck and cover procedures in the event of an earthquake and reviewing safety procedures with students. It is also IPSF Giving Day when our community comes together to celebrate the amazing programs and staff that make our schools shine — from music and instructional assistants to afterschool classes and so much more. Wear orange and make a gift to the Educational Excellence Fund to show your support for students and schools across Irvine. Together, we can make a brighter future possible. 🧡www.ipsf.net/orange

Please note students do not have school on Monday – enjoy your 3-day weekend…go Sharks!
In kindness,
Belinda Averill
Principal

Attendance Matters
As we move through the school year, I want to emphasize the crucial role that regular attendance plays in your student’s success. Every day of learning matters, and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in achieving strong academic outcomes and fostering a sense of belonging at school. Here’s why:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and assignments, leading to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Building Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students develop responsibility, time management, and perseverance—skills they will carry with them long after middle school.
  • Social Connections: Being in school allows students to participate fully in group work, social activities, and extracurriculars that are vital for their emotional and social growth.
  • Strong Foundations for Future Success: Studies show that students with high attendance rates are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education or career opportunities with confidence.

We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. However, I encourage you to do your best to schedule appointments, vacations, and other non-urgent activities outside of the school day to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.
