Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

On Monday, students will receive their schedule for 2nd Trimester during Homeroom. Due to master schedule needs and placement changes, we will be updated a sizable number of student schedules. We apologize if this will be disruptive for your student, however, we have done our best to minimize these. This is a common practice in secondary school. A few items about scheduling to note:

  • We are not able to make schedule changes to accommodate requests about teachers, friends, and times of the day. This is a common practice that continues through high school.
  • We use grades and test scores to place students in our intervention courses and once students meet proficiency, we are graduate them out or should we identify need based on learning outcomes from this trimester, we move students in.
  • Students requesting Bonus Period PE must be enrolled in a year-long elective and there are limited spots available. We prioritize students enrolled in music and intervention courses.

We ask that your student exhibit a growth mindset if there is a change and we have counselors available should there be a need to process and help support. Thank you!

Report cards will be finalized and released December 1st. We would like for you to review your student’s Work Habit and Citizenship marks as these are critical in understanding how your student is navigating expectations for these. We use these marks to identify possible interventions during the day and to award privileges like our upcoming dance. Developing positive work habits and behavior are just as important as academic learning and achievement.

We also want to take this time to remind you about getting to school on time…positive attendance matters! We are seeing an increase in students arriving late to school, especially during late start. Please work with your student to get up early enough in the morning and/or leave the house early enough to make it to school by 8:10am on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and by 8:55am on Wednesday and Thursday. If your student is meeting up with friends to get coffee or a Big Gulp, they still need to make it to school on time…thank you!

Attention 8th grade Parent/Guardians…Ms. Byars is collecting baby photos for the Yearbook. If you would like to submit for your student, please do so by December 19th.

Lastly, South Lake parent Sandra Albers is hosting a CAC casual meet-up for South Lake parents on Nov. 18th at 8:15am (right after the bell). Please check in at the front office. Everyone is welcome!

Have a great weekend…stay dry! it’s a great day to be a Shark!
In kindness,
Belinda Averill
Principal

California Healthy Kids Survey – 7th Grade Families
On Friday November 21st, our 7th graders will be taking the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) during their Science class. The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is an anonymous, confidential survey of school climate and safety, student wellness, and youth resiliency. In IUSD, it is administered to students at grades seven, nine, and eleven. It enables schools and communities to collect and analyze data regarding local youth health risks and behaviors, school connectedness, school climate, protective factors, and school violence. The CHKS is part of a comprehensive data-driven decision-making process on improving school climate and student learning environment for overall school improvements.

The CHKS has passive consent, which means students take the survey unless their family completes the California Healthy Kids Survey Notification and Withdrawal Form. We have made the form available electronically here, so you may opt your student out of taking the survey. Please reach out to Assistant Principal, Ms. Granger at megangranger@iusd.org if you have any questions.

Signing out Procedures
Just a reminder that when you are picking up your student early from school, please bring your photo ID into the office to verify your identification for safety purposes.  This identification may be your driver’s license, passport or a California ID card. It is critical to check your student out through the front office…thank you for helping us keep your student safe.

eBike Safety Presentation
All the eBike Safety presentations hosted by the high schools are completed. Moving forward, if you need to complete this in order to obtain a registration sticker to park on campus, please contact our Campus Supervisor, Mr. Vasquez at orlandovasquez@iusd.org. Safety presentations will most likely be held on Thursday mornings before school.

Chromebook Insurance
As we all know, accidents can happen with the IUSD Chromebook that is assigned and loaned to each student. Depending on the damage, this can be costly to a household. Please take a moment and get your Chromebook insurance. Attendance Matters
As we move through the school year, I want to emphasize the crucial role that regular attendance plays in your student’s success. Every day of learning matters, and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in achieving strong academic outcomes and fostering a sense of belonging at school. Here’s why:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and assignments, leading to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Building Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students develop responsibility, time management, and perseverance—skills they will carry with them long after middle school.
  • Social Connections: Being in school allows students to participate fully in group work, social activities, and extracurriculars that are vital for their emotional and social growth.
  • Strong Foundations for Future Success: Studies show that students with high attendance rates are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education or career opportunities with confidence.

We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. However, I encourage you to do your best to schedule appointments, vacations, and other non-urgent activities outside of the school day to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.
