Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

We are excited to celebrate the end of our school year with lots of fun activities. Tomorrow is our 8th grade Promotion Dance at the Boys and Girls Club. We have our Annual Staff/Student Softball game on Tuesday, Carnival and Talent Show on Wednesday and Wild Rivers (8th) and Field Day (7th) on Thursday. Thursday is a Minimum day for 7th graders as well as their last day of school. Friday is Promotion and the last day of school for our 8th graders. Also, we do not have Bonus Period PE next week, today was the last class for the year.

8th Grade Promotion Dance – May 31st
Students must bring their Student ID to the dance. PTSA will allow students to purchase tickets at the door for $30 cash only. Students must have the 2 PTSA Waivers completed as well as South Lake’s Dance Contract signed by parent/guardian. Remember students must adhere to dress code expectations – strapless and backless dresses are not permitted. Students are also NOT able to use their cell phone at the dance. We will have a lock box for storage of phones.

Yearbook Info – June 3rd
We will be distributing Yearbooks on Tuesday through Homeroom. For those still wanting to purchase, please bring $40 cash to the front office. We will sell until we run out of copies. Students have time to sign Yearbooks during the 8th grade Student/Staff Softball game after lunch. This is a fun tradition here at South Lake where our 8th graders compete against staff and alumni in softball while 7th graders cheer them on.

Wild Rivers Info – June 5th
Today was the last day to purchase tickets for Wild Rivers. Information about drop off/pick up and expectations for the day will be sent out to 8th grade families on Monday.

Promotion Information – June 6th
On Friday, June 6, at 9:30 A.M., eighth grade South Lake students will be honored in a promotion ceremony.  The ceremony will take place outside on our blacktop. Students are to arrive at their Homeroom location by 9:00 A.M.  Student dress for the ceremony should follow our dress code and dress nicer than everyday school attire.  Parents are welcome and invited to attend and there is no limit for guest count.  Family and friends attending will be sitting out on the grass behind the blacktop and will need to bring their own chair/seating.

We encourage families to walk from the neighborhood as parking will be limited. The ceremony will be livestreamed and the link is below. Students will be dismissed at the end of the promotion to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon with family. Please do not bring any noise makers to the ceremony…Thank you!

South Lake Middle School Library
Please turn in all borrowed materials to the library. All materials are due by Wednesday, June 4th. Fines will occur if materials are not returned. If you have any questions please contact Ms. Byars at mikaylabyars@iusd.org.

7th grade Parent/Guardians
Please consider signing your student up to start their World Language as an after-bell elective. We are fortunate to offer this through San Joaquin at Irvine Virtual Academy. These classes count toward high school credit, students who successfully complete the course move onto level 2 in 9th grade. The majority of the course is asynchronous with two live online class sessions weekly. Students can enroll in the following World Languages: SPANISH, KOREAN, CHINESE, & FRENCH. For those interested in World Language through IVA, please fill out the World Language Registration Form so that we can enroll your student for next year. Please know, students are only able to take a maximum of two electives in 8th grade so students enrolling in a world language are not eligible for Bonus Period PE.

7th grade Parent/Guardians are able to pick up your free copy of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt in the front office through June 6th. This is a powerful and timely book that explores one of the most pressing issues facing young people today: the rising tide of anxiety, depression, and disconnection in our children and teens. As a school and community deeply committed to the well-being and growth of every student, we believe that engaging in this shared reading experience will help us better understand the complex challenges our kids face in today’s digital world—and how we, together, can support them. Please see our website for more information.

Lastly, please plan on attending one of our in-person South Lake Orientation to go over our schoolwide practices and specific South Lake Cares expectations so that we can partner together in ensuring both you and your student are set up for a successful year. The orientation will last about 45 minutes and will be held in the MPR. At least one parent/guardian from every household is being asked to attend on ONE of the following dates/times:

  • Tuesday, August 19th at 8:20am
  • Tuesday, August 19th at 5:00pm
  • Wednesday, August 20th at 9:05am
  • Wednesday, August 20th at 5:00pm
  • Thursday, September 4th at 5:00pm

End of Year Reminders for All Students
Students must adhere to our safety expectations for e-Bikes including wearing a helmet and following guidelines from IPD in their safety presentations. As parents, we expect you to reinforce these with your student. Students are expected to follow our South Lake Cares behavior expectations to be able to participate in all the fun end of year activities. We will have alternative activities prepared for students not meeting our expectations. This includes during the Softball game, Carnival, Field Day, and Wild Rivers.

Have a wonderful weekend Sharks!
In kindness,
Belinda Averill

South Lake Information and Resources

Attention 8th grade Families with students going to WHS - Free Physical Exam Information
All students participating in summer camps, offseason, and regular-season athletic activities at WHS are required to have a 2025-26  Athletic Clearance on file, including an up to date Physical Examination (dated May 1st - Aug. 30, valid for one calendar year). The Woodbridge High Athletic Department strongly suggests taking advantage of the following complimentary physical examination opportunity in order to ensure compliance with the Athletic Clearance requirements for the academic year.

Woodbridge High School will host two free physical clinics provided by Hoag Urgent Care on Tuesday, June 3rd from 4-7pm, in the WHS Gym.
*All students must bring a Physical Exam Form and have a parent present in order to attend.
If applicable, students must bring:

  • Hearing Aids (if needed)
  • Glasses/Contact Lens
  • Previous Physical Examination Copy from a specialist if the student has any chronic conditions

Tuesday, June 3rd
4:00-5:30 pm: current 8th & 9th Grades - Last Name A-G
5:30-7:00 pm: current 8th & 9th Grades - Last Name F-Z

Hoag medical team is providing these physical examinations to students free of charge! WHS is hopeful that this can ease the athletic clearance process for all athletes.

End of Day Attendance
Please avoid signing your student out during the last 30 minutes of the school day unless it’s an emergency. This time is critical for wrapping up instruction, providing important reminders, and ensuring a smooth, safe dismissal for all students. Early sign-outs can be disruptive not just to the learning environment but also disrupts the efficiency of the front office. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a focused and orderly environment.

Summer Planning
Looking ahead to summer, many students look forward to a well-earned break—but the shift from structured school days to long, unstructured hours can also present challenges. Here are a few ways families can support students in maintaining balance, well-being, and connection during the summer months:
🕒 Maintain a Simple Routine
While students deserve flexibility, keeping a loose daily structure helps them feel secure and productive. Encourage a consistent sleep schedule, regular meal times, and a few daily responsibilities (like chores, reading, or physical activity). This rhythm helps prevent the summer slide and makes the transition back to school smoother.
📱 Manage Screen Time Mindfully
With more free time, screen use often increases. Talk as a family about what healthy screen time looks like—balancing entertainment with creativity, connection, and movement. Consider device-free meals or “unplugged” hours each day. Resources like Common Sense Media can help families evaluate age-appropriate content and build digital habits that support mental health.
🤝 Nurture Friendships & Social Confidence
Middle schoolers deeply value their social connections. Encourage in-person and outdoor hangouts, or local camps where students can practice teamwork and communication in relaxed settings. Another great option is community service! Summer is also a great time to reflect on what healthy friendships look and feel like—and how to navigate challenges with kindness and confidence.

Mental Health & Academic Supports
IUSD Family Counseling Center
The IUSD Family Counseling Center (IFCC) offers short-term, evidence-based mental health services provided by licensed mental health therapists for IUSD K-12 students and families.
Care Solace
To better serve our students, families, and staff, IUSD has partnered with Care Solace, which offers free and confidential services to connect families to outside mental health providers. Care Solace provides concierge services to assist families in navigating mental health services in the community.
Hazel Health
IUSD has also partnered with Hazel Health, a telehealth behavioral health company that provides one-on-one counseling from a professional therapist at no cost to IUSD students. A parent/guardian may refer their student through a link found on the IUSD website, or a referral can be made by the student’s school counselor, elementary resource counselor, mental health specialist, school psychologist, or administrator at their school. Students must have parental permission to enroll for services unless they are 18 or older.
Academic Supports
Khan Academy and Paper Tutoring provide students with avenues for academic assistance, alleviating some of the stressors that may impact their mental well-being.

For families seeking more information on IUSD mental health supports, please visit the Mental Health and Wellness website.

Language and Accessibility Resources for Families
As part of IUSD’s and our school’s ongoing commitment to making important information, resources and services accessible to our diverse community, we want to remind families that they can adjust language and accessibility preferences on the platforms used for school communications. Whether through ParentSquare, the Parent Portal or the IUSD website, it is easy to set your preferred language, ensuring you receive updates, notifications and resources in the language that works best for you.

CLICK HERE for resources, in multiple languages, to show how you can select your preferred language and accessibility features on ParentSquare. With ParentSquare, you can set your language preference to receive notifications, messages and updates directly in the language of your choice.

Attendance Matters
As we move through the school year, I want to emphasize the crucial role that regular attendance plays in your student’s success. Every day of learning matters, and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in achieving strong academic outcomes and fostering a sense of belonging at school. Here’s why:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and assignments, leading to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Building Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students develop responsibility, time management, and perseverance—skills they will carry with them long after middle school.
  • Social Connections: Being in school allows students to participate fully in group work, social activities, and extracurriculars that are vital for their emotional and social growth.
  • Strong Foundations for Future Success: Studies show that students with high attendance rates are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education or career opportunities with confidence.

We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. However, I encourage you to do your best to schedule appointments, vacations, and other non-urgent activities outside of the school day to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.

OC Bus Ride Guide – How to Ride:

For more information regarding the program visit: OCbus.com/YouthRideFree.  OC Connect is another option for students. This is a free shuttle service that runs every 20 minutes between the northern end of Irvine and the Irvine Train Station.  This route drops off at Woodbridge High which is a short walk from here. The IrvineCONNECT webpage may be accessed through this link:  https://www.cityofirvine.org/transportation/irvine-connect. On the webpage there is a link to track the shuttles in real time, which can be used in a similar way to watching for an Uber to see how far out it is.
