Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to shine a light on the importance of mental health and taking care of ourselves and each other. At South Lake, we are promoting positive mental health strategies and encouraging open conversations to help reduce the stigma around seeking support. Together, we can create a safe and caring community where students know they are never alone.

This week we held two important orientations with all our students. The first is our Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, you received an explanation in an email on Tuesday. The other is our first Guidance Lesson of the year explaining our Counseling Program at South Lake including an introduction to our Counselors, how to contact a Counselor and supports, and sizing the problem. Our 7th grade students also participated in their first SEAMS lesson with our Middle School Resource Officers about Situational Awareness. The presentation included tips for being safe in the community, how to respond to danger, upstander behavior, as well as eBike safety.

Here are some tips to review:
Situational Awareness & Community Safety

  • Pay attention to your surroundings—limit distractions like headphones and phones when walking or riding.
  • Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, move to a safe place and seek help.

Responding to Danger

  • Stay calm and think quickly about the safest option: get away, find help, or call 911.
  • Empowered students to run away from danger, hide, or fight, if there is on campus violence during the school day.

Upstander Behavior

  • Speak up or get help if you see someone being treated unsafely.
  • Support your peers—sometimes standing with someone or reporting concerns makes all the difference.

eBike Safety

  • Always wear a properly fitted helmet and follow traffic rules just like cars do.
  • Ride predictably—use hand signals, stay visible, and always ride on the right side of the road/sidewalk.

This year, we are also working with the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) Student Advocates for Mental Health program to promote mental health awareness and share resources with our student body.

To get started, your child will attend a one-hour workshop titled, “Mental Health 101 for Student Advocates,” next week. This virtual workshop will provide students with foundational knowledge of mental health concepts that will support them to become advocates for themselves and others on our school campus.

During this workshop, youth participants will learn about:

  • Basic concepts of mental health
  • Prevalence of mental health conditions among youth and factors that can contribute
  • Strategies for ending mental health stigma
  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health conditions among youth
  • Warning signs associated with suicide and how to support a peer in need
  • Stress reduction and self-care strategies
  • School and community resources where students can seek help for themselves and others

Together, we value our partnership with community partnerships, faculty and families, to ensure every student feels supported, connected, and ready to thrive.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend…go Sharks!
In kindness,
Belinda Averill
Principal

Attendance Matters
As we move through the school year, I want to emphasize the crucial role that regular attendance plays in your student’s success. Every day of learning matters, and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in achieving strong academic outcomes and fostering a sense of belonging at school. Here’s why:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and assignments, leading to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Building Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students develop responsibility, time management, and perseverance—skills they will carry with them long after middle school.
  • Social Connections: Being in school allows students to participate fully in group work, social activities, and extracurriculars that are vital for their emotional and social growth.
  • Strong Foundations for Future Success: Studies show that students with high attendance rates are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education or career opportunities with confidence.

We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. However, I encourage you to do your best to schedule appointments, vacations, and other non-urgent activities outside of the school day to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.
