Social Media Trend - Please Read

Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

We want to inform you about a concerning trend known as the “Chromebook Challenge” that has been circulating on social media. This challenge involves intentionally damaging Chromebooks by jamming lead or metal into the charging port causing them to short out, possibly catch on fire and/or cause an electric shock. This behavior not only leads to costly damage of school property, but also puts students at risk of disciplinary action and could potentially compromise their safety.

We are actively monitoring the situation and working with students to reinforce the importance of responsible technology use. Please take a moment to speak with your child about the seriousness of this issue and the consequences of participating in such activities.

We are reminding students that even if you have purchased Chromebook insurance through the district, that this would not be covered by that policy, as it only covers accidental damages. Full replacements of the device caused by this damage are $225. Parents have the option to purchase a $20 warranty from IUSD to cover accidental damage and theft. This is a one-time fee for the school year to cover potential incidents like cracked screens, missing keyboard keys, damaged plastics, liquid spills, and theft. For more information about Chromebook Insurance, please go to https://support.iusd.org/hc/en-us/articles/360033840394-IUSD-Chromebook-Insurance-Program

Funds raised from this program will be used to repair damage devices, replace devices, and ensure our schools have enough devices to provide to provide access to every student in IUSD.

If you have any questions or notice unusual behavior related to your child’s Chromebook use, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe and respectful.

In kindness,
Belinda Averill
