South Lake Newsletter - November 19, 2021

Good Afternoon Sharks,

Given that the Thanksgiving Holiday spans varying traditions and meaning across cultures, we do hope that this time off is rejuvenating, calm and joyful. We have had a busy week on campus kicking off the new trimester. We started our week reviewing South Lake Cares Behavior Expectations with students, then ASB hosted the Cookie Decorating activity and we cheered on our Volleyball Lunchtime sports Championship matches, and ended with our Phase Three move for Measure E. Our teachers in the portables (Hartman, Leavey, Welch, & Sjogren) moved into the newly renovated 500 wing and our teachers in the 400 wing (Dharman, Ly, Baldwin, Plick, & Ross) moved out to the Portables.

In the spirit of thanks, I am eternally grateful for our South Lake Community – our students, families, and staff – WE are all South Lake! This has been another year of firsts and one that has challenged us in so many ways yet there is so much to be thankful for, so have a wonderful holiday…Go Sharks!

With care,

Belinda Averill

Parent Resources

Children’s Hospital in Orange County (CHOC) is offering free parent webinars covering a range of topics. Here is a list of all the upcoming trainings in November and December (scroll down past October).

Your donations to IPSF provides critical resources to our school that are needed now more than ever. Mental health resources, smaller class sizes, and funding for grants to support innovation are just a few of the ways that parent donations to IPSF help support South Lake. These resources are made possible through parent donations to IPSF’s Educational Excellence Fund. Donations received by the end of this year will determine what programs can be offered in our school next year.

By working together as one community, we can ensure that every student has access to educational excellence. Please join me in supporting IPSF by making a donation online at  Your impact can be even greater when you donate now. The City of Irvine will generously match your donation dollar for dollar - doubling the impact at our school. This means that with a $50 donation, $100 will go toward your child's education. We need your support to maximize this opportunity!

Make your donation today to support South Lake – your support makes a meaningful difference for our school!

See’s Candies Fundraiser

Our PTSA has created an 8th Grade Promotion Fundraiser at See’s Candies. Please head to to do some holiday shopping and support our 8th grade class activities.

Wednesday Morning – Open Library

We will be opening the Library on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 – 9:15am for students to work independently on assignments, make up assessments, and/or retakes. We will limit this to 25 students and there will be a sign in sheet with Mrs. Espinosa. She will be supervising and supporting students during this time.

Paper – Free Tutoring!

Paper Tutoring is a free resource, giving your student 24/7 access to chat with tutors for live help and assignment support.  Paper helps parents and guardians avoid the cost, time, and stress of having to relearn trigonometry and Shakespeare or hire a private tutor to help their child with classwork.  Paper can provide support with homework help, writing feedback (i.e. editing essays), and study support.  Help is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French.

Students can access Paper Tutoring directly from their class  Canvas  Page.

Student Appointments

We would like to remind you that student’s must be checked out of school from the front office. We do ask that you try arrange appointments after school to limit the disruption to the school day as much as possible and avoid picking up at lunch (12:54 – 1:29pm)…thank you!

Safety Procedures

Please refer to IUSD’s Safety and Planning Guide  for current information and resources. We ask that you continue to Health Screen your student every morning before they leave for school and to keep students at home when they are sick. The Safety and Planning Guide includes the Student Symptom Decision Tree to assist with identifying symptoms. Students exhibiting high or low risk symptoms at school will be sent home immediately. In addition, IUSD will continue to implement health and safety mitigation measures, including upgraded HVAC systems, standalone air purification units in learning and office spaces, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols, access to frequent hand washing and hand sanitizer stations, and the use of outdoor and flexible learning spaces to the extent possible. Everyone is required to wear masks when inside regardless of vaccination status. Students and staff are not required to wear masks when outside.
