South Lake Newsletter - November 3, 2023

Hello November

Good Afternoon South Lake Community,

Our Mission Statement reads as follows, “At South Lake, students will become intellectual risk takers who persevere within a safe, yet rigorous learning environment to navigate college and career options with confidence, skills, and diligence.” Why take risks? For adults it’s to continuously discover our full potential through reflection, refinement and action based on the results of the risk. So what does it mean to be an intellectual risk taker for students? For some students it is raising their hand in class to participate, being uncomfortable with not knowing the outcome of a learning experience but confident enough to still take the chance. For others it means learning from their mistakes, using feedback and making changes to move forward. It can also mean taking a different perspective, trying something new, or problem solving a situation independently. Middle School is when the adolescent brain is developing these skills so it’s optimal for your student to practice intellectual risks and become comfortable taking them safely. At South Lake, our students are coached to:
  • Persevere through a challenge.
  • Identify what they know, are still learning or need to know.
  • Problem solve in different ways and be flexible with their thinking.
  • Know it’s okay to make a mistake, recognize it, and grow from it!
At South Lake, we aim to create a safe environment to allow room for this kind of growth. As part of this, we work with students to be accepting of others, kind and encouraging of others, and inclusive with each other. This starts with how we speak to each other, be there for one another, and show kindness. We look to your partnership as parents and guardians to model this and reinforce these actions. Together, we are stronger!

Please see that next week we have a special schedule on Thursday. School will start at 8:15am, there is no late start, and we will not have Shark Time and end the school day at 1:30pm. There is no school on Friday in honor of Veteran’s Day.

Help is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Students can access Paper Tutoring directly from their class Canvas Page. Some additional resources are this informational video on Paper TutoringPaper for Parents & Guardians and Paper Website: Unlimited Tutoring, Anywhere & Anytime.

Student Attendance
It is important to make every effort to have your student in school and on time. While attendance and success in school are positively correlated and directly linked, there are times when a student should stay home and absences are necessary.
  • Illness - Please keep student home when they have any of the following signs and symptoms of illness: Fever (temp > 100.4), excessive runny nose, excessive cough, two or more episodes of vomiting in the last 24 hours, or an unexplained rash.
  • Mental health – a new California law states that absences for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health shall be excused (Ed Code 48205)After 5 absences, a doctor’s note will be required.
  • Doctor appointments
  • Court appointments
  • Funerals for immediate family members
We want to honor and support the mental and physical health of our students, and we also need to prioritize the importance of attendance both for student success and to ensure that IUSD receives critically important state funding for our schools. Please know that the School Attendance Review Board (SARB process) will be initiated, when a student accumulates 3 unexcused absences or truancies. If you have concerns about extended absences or if you have any questions about attendance, please don’t hesitate to call. We appreciate your partnership in supporting the health, happiness, and academic achievement of our students.
