Good Afternoon South Lake Community, South Lake is committed to creating a safe and welcoming school environment. As mentioned at the start of the school year, one of our emphasis this year is promoting the use of inclusive language, both on line and at school, and demonstrating upstander behavior. In our classrooms. Through assemblies and classroom discussions, we have explained that hate speech is not permitted nor accepted and that should we hear it, we will intervene and include a learning opportunity to help students understand their impact when harmful speech or actions occur. As part of our commitment, we are implementing a Hate Speech Social Emotional Learning lesson through our history classes, lead my Mrs. Shalonda Ibrahim-Abubakar, IUSD Community Support provider for our African-American/Black community. She will be presenting to students over the next few weeks to support our students, and our community, to better recognize and respond to implicit and explicit prejudicial and harmful language or actions toward others in the school setting.Middle school aged students are impulsive with their words and actions which is why we emphasize lessons about intent/impact and upstander behavior to help shape positive behaviors. We are sensitive to the developmental stage our students are in and use as many opportunities as we can to guide, teach and reteach positive behaviors. As a parent/guardian, we look to you reinforce our mission of creating a positive school community by reinforcing the importance of using inclusive language at all times…on the walk/ride to school, in chats and communications via social media, in a game, and in daily conversation…all the time! Thank you! Shark Success Night is on October 26th from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. Shark Success Night is dedicated time for our teachers to meet with students and parents/guardians to address specific need(s) for a class or multiple classes. We use this model in lieu of individual conferences so that it is more efficient to get around to all teachers and meet with more families over the two hours. We will be communicating out to all families after the Progress Reporting window closes with specific information about your attendance. Parents/guardians of students meeting or exceeding proficiency in their classes will receive confirmation that attendance is not required. We will be inviting parents/guardians should your attendance be required. It is important that you know that you may reach out to a specific teacher(s) at any time should you have questions or concerns about your child over the course of the year. We encourage you to use Aeries, Canvas and your child’s Planner to stay up to date with their progress. Our math teachers will not be able to review the Math Pathways during Shark Success Night. IUSD website has resources to assist with navigating the pathways on their website at Mathematics Pathways. Lastly, IUSD annual College and Career Fair is at Northwood High School on October 26th. Live Drug Free.” This year’s National Campaign theme resonates with the District’s dedication to fostering student mental health and well-being. More information forthcoming!  e-Vehicle Registration - Make-Up Students will not be able to park on campus without a registration sticker. We will also be enforcing all rules and regulations covered in the IPD Safety Presentation. We are holding a make-up session for anyone who still needs to register their vehicle on October 12th at 8:10am or 3:10pm in the Multipurpose Room . The presentation is 45mins and students must attend with a parent/guardian. Mental Health Training for Parents CHOC’s Mental Health Education Program is beginning their first of four-education series including a parent component. The modules are sequential but is it not necessary to attend all to benefit from the shared information. The first topic is one of great relevance and is focused on: Depression, Anxiety, and Social Isolation. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness have been at an all-time high for kids these past few years. Learn about some of the most common challenges kids and teens face and how to overcome them. All sessions are presented LIVE on ZOOM by CHOC mental health professionals. If you miss a session, you can still join the next one! Whether you are at school, work, or out in the community, rock your ORANGE to raise awareness about the importance of community support of public education! www.Ipsf.net/givingday  Title I Information Your child attends South Lake Middle School which receives Federal Title I funds to assist students in meeting state achievement standards. Much of the funding allocated to us through Title I is used for reducing class size, providing targeted supports for populations of students not meeting proficiency in state standards, and mental health and wellness supports. As a parent/guardian, you have the right to request information about the qualifications of the classroom staff working with your child. Please see our Parent Right to Know Letter to learn more about this. Prior to the start of the school year, we shared our Parent-Student-Staff Compact in our Data Confirmation process. Our partnership is vital and necessary to ensure all students make the academic, social, and emotional growth. Our School Site Council (SSC) is a governing body that is made up of all stakeholder groups and provide input and feedback about how resources, including Title I funding, is allocated and prioritized. All parents/guardians are invited to attend SSC. We meet 4-5 times a year on Wednesday afternoons. The date for our first meeting is October 18th. By law, we are required to have 3 voting members on our SSC and hold an annual election to vote them in. Please take a minute to vote by going to the SSC Voting Ballot. We have three candidates running. Thank you!  Paper – Free TutoringAs your student is getting going with their academics, please know that IUSD offers Paper Tutoring, a free resource, giving your student 24/7 access to chat with tutors for live help and assignment support. Paper helps parents and guardians avoid the cost, time, and stress of having to relearn geometry and poetry or hire a private tutor to help their child with classwork. Paper can provide support with homework help, writing feedback (i.e. editing essays), and study support. Help is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Students can access Paper Tutoring directly from their class Canvas Page. Student Attendance It is important to make every effort to have your student in school and on time. While attendance and success in school are positively correlated and directly linked, there are times when a student should stay home and absences are necessary.
OCTA Youth Ride Free Program The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is excited to announce the continuation of their “Youth Ride Free” promotional bus pass program. This free youth pass allows youth ages 6 to 18 to ride all OC fixed-route buses every day for free. Last year’s orange/red Youth Ride Free passes expire September 30, 2023; the new purple/orange Youth Ride Free passes are valid now through September 30, 2023 and require a new Parent Request Form for each recipient.
