South Lake Handbook

Honest behavior is an expectation of all students in the Irvine Unified School District and South Lake Middle School. South Lake shall notify all students and parents/guardians annually of the rules pertaining to academic honesty and implement preventative measures that reduce the likelihood of academic honesty violations.

Violations of academic honesty can inhibit learning and adversely impact the accuracy of grades. When academic honesty violations occur, consequences shall be determined through an evaluation of the specific situation, shall be commensurate with the seriousness of the act, and shall take into consideration the previous record of the student. When appropriate, consequences for violations of academic honesty shall be imposed both at the school and the classroom level commensurate with the grade level and developmental needs of the student.

All academic honesty violations, whether handled by a teacher or another school official, shall be documented in the student’s discipline file for future reference. Parents/guardians shall be made aware of each academic honesty violation and consequence. Please refer to IUSD Board Policy 5131.9 for more information.

Taking part in school activities and field trips is a privilege. To keep this privilege, students are expected to maintain good Work Habits and Citizenship (avoiding multiple 1 or 2 marks), attend school regularly, and follow South Lake Cares expectations. Students with chronic absences or multiple serious behavior issues may not be permitted to participate. The Principal or Assistant Principal will determine eligibility.

Absences

Students are required by law to attend school regularly. Every absence from school MUST be cleared by a parent or guardian. Absences should be cleared by calling the 24-hour Voice Mail ATTENDANCE LINE (949) 936-6701 on the day of an absence. A doctor’s note should be submitted within three days of the student’s return to school to excuse absences or tardiness. If the note is not submitted to the attendance clerk or a call is not made within this timeframe, the absence will be unexcused. When contacting the school about an absence, it is necessary to include the following information:

a. Student’s full name (spelling last name)
b. Date of absence
c. Specific reason for absence
d. Name of Parent/Guardian

If a student is late to school over 30 minutes, is unexcused absent from school three times, is excused absent from school 10 times, or a combination of these, the student may be deemed truant, and a doctor’s note or visit to the school health clerk may be necessary to excuse absences.

Student absence for religious instruction or participation in religious exercises away from school property may be considered excused subject to law and administrative regulations. Written verification by the parent/guardian and the approval of the principal or designated site administrator is necessary in order to excuse the absence. (Education Code 48205) Other excused absences include:

  • Illness - Please keep your child home when they have any of the following signs and symptoms of illness: Fever (temp > 100.4), excessive runny nose, excessive cough, two or more episodes of vomiting in the last 24 hours, or an unexplained rash
  • Mental health - California law states that absences for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health shall be excused (Ed Code 48205). After 5 absences, a doctor’s note will be required.
  • Doctor appointments
  • Court appointments
  • Funerals for immediate family members

Tardy Policy

Refer to South Lake’s bell schedule and calendar (included in this planner) for start/end times for each class. Start times for Anchor Days and Late Starts are different. Student arriving anytime after the start of school must check in at the front office before going to class. Students are required to be on time to all classes. Repeated tardies will result in the following:

TardyConsequence
1-2Warning
3Contact Home
4Contact Home + Detention
5Administration Contact Home + Detention
6Additional consequences/parent conference determined by Administration

Excessive tardiness and absences will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Appointments Off Campus

Students must be signed out in the office before leaving campus by a person listed in student contacts. If a student is signed out for medical reasons, a doctor’s note needs to be provided upon return. If at all possible, appointments made during the school day should be avoided. Since students who leave campus early are not in school for the entire day, students who are signed out excessively may be deemed chronically absent.

Make-up Work

Students are expected to be responsible for making up missed work. Please check Canvas or Google Classroom for all homework and classroom assignments when missing class.

Short-term Independent Study

Short-Term Independent Study affords students the opportunity to continue their education while away from school for a short-term period of time - a maximum of 15 days. Participation in independent study shall be agreed upon by both the parent or guardian and the school (mutually voluntary). Independent study does not replace the learning experiences in classrooms and is in no way equal to the instructional experience in the classroom. As such, the continuity of learning topics between independent study assignments and the in- person classes cannot be guaranteed, as a teacher may adapt instruction based on class needs. Please note that the school reserves the right to deny short- term independent study requests at any time.

Short-term independent study contracts should be requested a minimum of five school days prior to the start date. The duration of the agreement must be a minimum of 5 school days and a maximum of 15 school days. Contracts should be completed and signed prior to the first day of the short-term independent study period. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor and implement the contract.

Any assignments given while this agreement is in effect shall be submitted at the end of the agreement or in a time frame agreed upon by the administrator. If special accommodations are needed to achieve the learning objectives, please contact your child’s teacher or school administrator. For students with an IEP or 504 Plan, a meeting is required to discuss the applicability of a short-term independent study contract and must occur prior to the initiation of a short-term contract. Students are required to complete their course work within the set timeframe and it is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to monitor progress while on Short-Term Independent Study, and NOT the responsibility of the teacher.

Permission to Leave Class

In order to leave a room during class, students must have a hall pass issued by a teacher. Students should arrive prepared with necessary materials for each class and should use the restrooms between classes or at break. Restroom breaks should be limited to 5 minutes.

Emergency Information

Parents are required to provide the school with emergency information and to notify the school should name, addresses and telephone number change.

Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters are to be locked in our designated bicycle rack area upon arrival at school. Students are to bring their own lock and may not lock their bike, skateboard or scooter with another student’s as this can be disruptive if one student must unexpectedly leave during the school day. A special rack for locking skateboards is located in the bike rack area. Students are allowed in this area only to put their transportation away and pick them up. Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters are not to be ridden on campus and are the responsibility of the student. South Lake Middle School is not responsible for damage or loss.

Students are required by state law to wear bike helmets for any of these forms of transportation.

e-VEHICLE EXPECTATIONS

SLMS students will be able to park and lock their registered e-bike, e-scooter and/or e-skateboard in an approved bike rack area. Vehicles parked without a registration sticker or on an unauthorized location on campus will be issued the following:

1st Offense: Warning
2nd Offense: Detention
3rd Offense: e-Vehicle held by office

Students who meet the following requirements will be eligible for a registration sticker:

  • Attendance at an e-Vehicle Safety meeting at a high school campus prior to issuance of a registration sticker.
  • Parent/Guardian attendance at an e-Vehicle Safety meeting at a high school campus prior to issuance of a registration sticker.
  • Meets the e-Vehicle Operation Expectations outlined below.

E-Vehicle Operation Expectations:

  • Students will walk their e-bike, e-scooter, or e-skateboard, respectfully and safely at all times on campus.

  • Students will wear a helmet at all times while operating their e-Vehicle.
  • Students will follow safety guidelines detailed in the e- Vehicle Safety meeting.

(Registration stickers are non-transferable from person to person)

Consequences for not meeting expectations:

  • Students not meeting expectations may receive detention.
  • Students with excessive violations of e-Vehicle Expectations may lose their parking privilege.
  • Students with excessive violations may result in suspension of registration sticker.
  • SLMS Administration reserves the right to revoke any permit if any of the above expectations or other expectations in the South Lake Cares Code of Conduct are not met.

At South Lake, we establish a safe learning environment in which students are expected to treat each other with respect. We have taken a proactive approach by teaching our students the behavior expectations of our school at the start of the school year and multiple times over the course of the year. Our Counseling department, in conjunction with school administration and teachers, regularly promote kindness and anti-bullying strategies by presenting lessons and activities.

No student or group of students shall, through physical, written, verbal, or other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate, cyberbully, cause bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any other student or school personnel. Students who have been bullied or cyberbullied shall promptly report such incidents to any staff member.

"Bullying" is defined as any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or by means of an electronic act, and including one or more acts committed by a pupil or group of pupils as defined in Section 48900.2, 48900.3, or 48900.4. (Please go to www.iusd.org under Board Policy and refer to section 5145.8).

Students are expected to stay in designated areas during break and lunch. Students are not permitted to leave campus without being signed out. The bike rack area is available when students arrive and depart school. Students are not permitted in the buildings before school, after school, during break, and/or during lunch unless they are supervised by a staff member.

To limit distractions and maintain a focused learning environment, cell phones must be turned off and put away for the entire school day. This means absolutely no calls, texts, or social media usage during school hours, including with parents/guardians, siblings, or other family members.

If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the front office. Students are only permitted to call home for illness from the Health Office, and only when supervised by staff. Smartwatches used for communication purposes or social media will be confiscated and will result in the same consequences as a cell phone.

Taking photographs, video, or audio recordings at school or of other students/staff is not permitted without prior permission from a teacher or administrator. Student cell phone use will result in the following:

South Lake is NOT responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen cell phones or electronic devices.

InfractionConsequence

South Lake Middle School has a closed campus policy. Students are expected to remain at school once they arrive on campus in the morning until they are dismissed at the end of their last period. Students may not leave campus for lunch. We ask that parents not take their children out to lunch. All adult visitors to the campus must sign in at the office and receive a visitor badge.

Parents are NOT permitted to drop off purchased lunch or have food delivered for their student (i.e. Door Dash, Uber Eats)

It is important that parents receive information regarding school activities; therefore, it is the students’ responsibility to take all informational forms home to their parents. Principal’s newsletter will be emailed home highlighting school events and significant calendar dates. Parents have ongoing access to student grades through Parent Portal at www.myiusd.org and class/homework assignments through Canvas and Google Classroom. Parents are encouraged to use e-mail and voice mail to communicate with teachers. Parents keep your email contact in Parent Portal updated.

Students are supported by a counselor who provides individual assistance to students and parents upon request, and who may also have group meetings with students to address concerns. Appointments may be made with our counselor by either student or parent request. You may contact our counselor through Canvas messaging or email them directly. See Faculty Directory on South Lake Website for contact information.

Our School Psychologist works specifically with Special Education students identified through an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) and can provide additional support as necessary. See Faculty Directory on South Lake Website for contact information.

At South Lake Middle School, learning does not stop when the bell rings. We expect students to complete all coursework not finished in the allotted time provided in class, to continue practicing skills, and/or studying and preparing for assessment. South Lake students should typically dedicate at least 30 minutes to one hour nightly at home to completing coursework, practicing skills, and/or reading as needed. This work serves several important purposes:

  • Deepening Understanding: It provides an opportunity to further explore concepts introduced in class and helps strengthen understanding of the material.
  • Skill Reinforcement: Regular practice helps solidify new skills and ensures application of learned content.
  • Preparation: Completing this work helps students prepare for upcoming lessons and assessments as building blocks for learning.
  • Assessing Progress: Teachers may use coursework completed outside of class for assessment purposes. This allows teachers to gauge work ethic and, more importantly, the independent level of understanding of the content. While daily practice may not always be graded for completion, major projects and long-term assignments will be graded to evaluate student proficiency.

School dances are held for South Lake students only. Tickets are sold at school during the week prior to the dance.

Dance Behavior Expectations:

  1. Once students arrive at the dance, they must remain until the end of the dance unless they are picked up by a parent or an individual whose name is on the student’s emergency card.
  2. Students with multiple 1 or 2 marks for Work Habits and/or Citizenship will not be permitted to attend the dance.
  3. Students who are absent from school on the day of a dance will not be allowed to attend the dance.
  4. Students are not permitted to use their cell phone inside the dance area.
  5. South Lake Student Behavior Code expectations are in effect at all dances which includes our Dress Code.
  6. Inappropriate behavior at a dance (before, during or after) may result in consequences.
  7. Parents or guardians are expected to pick students up no later than 15 minutes after the end of the dance.

South Lake Middle School expects that all students will dress in a way that is appropriate for the school day or for any school sponsored event. Student dress choices should respect our intent to foster an atmosphere of learning while encouraging positive behavior. The primary responsibility for a student’s attire resides with the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s). The school is responsible for seeing that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any student, that student attire does not contribute to a hostile or intimidating atmosphere for any student, while encouraging students to develop the responsibility of dressing appropriately for different situations. Any restrictions to the way a student dresses are made to support the overall educational goals of the school and are explained within this dress code.

  1. Basic Principle: Certain body parts must be covered for all students at all times.
Clothes must be worn in a way that all gender distinctive body parts and undergarments are fully covered. All items listed in the “must wear” and “may wear” categories below must meet this basic principle.

    • Pants or the equivalent (for example, a skirt, sweatpants, leggings, a dress or shorts), AND
    • Shoes.
  3. Students May Wear, as long as these items do not violate the Basic Principle/Section 1 above:

    • Skirts or shorts that have a minimum inseam of 4 inches (or equivalent length that covers gender distinctive body parts)
    • Hats and/or hooded sweatshirts may only be worn outside, and inside with teacher discretion
    • Fitted pants/jeans, including opaque leggings and yoga pants
    • Ripped jeans, as long as undergarments are not exposed and holes are not located above the 4- inch inseam line
    • Tank tops, as long as undergarments would not be exposed

    • Accessories that could be considered dangerous or could be used as a weapon
    • Any item (including makeup, face paint) that obscures the face (except as a religious observance or for medical reason)

We follow South Lake Cares: Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, and Take Care of our School, each of which have set expectations that are reviewed with all students at the start of the year. It is expected that students will behave appropriately in and out of the classroom. South Lake employs a Positive Behavior Recognition program (PBIS) where students are taught appropriate behaviors expectations in all settings of the school and are recognized for displaying appropriate behavior. Please refer to South Lake Cares expectations page.

Maintaining a safe environment is our first priority. Students who create an unsafe environment for themselves or others, or interfere with the learning process may face disciplinary action.

Students not following expected behaviors may be issued any/all of the following: parent contact, social restriction, detention, other means of correction including Alt to Suspension, and/or suspension according to progressive discipline practices.

Report Cards and Progress Reports:

Progress reports will be available online for viewing on the Parent Portal within a week after the close of each grading period and midway through each trimester. Grades are updated on a consistent basis on the Parent Portal and Canvas. See Work Habits and Citizenship Reporting table for more information.

South Lake does not allow gum on campus during school hours. Students repeatedly violating this policy may receive social restriction, detention, and/or parent contact.

To minimize distractions and ensure student safety, wireless headphones and earbuds, including AirPods, are not permitted at school. Any headphones used on campus during the school day must be wired and can only be used with a Chromebook.

Each student will be assigned a Homeroom teacher. The Homeroom teacher assists students with educational planning and monitors progress. When needed, Homeroom teachers will be able to contact classroom teachers and support staff.

Irvine Unified School District takes appropriate steps to protect your child from injuries. Even so, accidents can and do happen while participating in normal activities that take place on campus, on school trips, and during extra-curricular activities and sports. Since our school district does not provide accident medical insurance for school related injuries, it does offer affordable insurance plans to help you in the event of an accident and urges you to purchase the plan that best fits your needs. Students participating in interscholastic sports are required by state law to have medical insurance.

The purpose of the Media Center is to create an atmosphere where students study, read, select books, view media and use computers in a responsible manner. There is no food or drinks in the Media Center. Students need to bring their Student ID to school every day to be able to check out materials from the Media Center.

A parent or guardian may write a written excuse for PE for a student for up to three days. After three days, a doctor’s note is required. A student with asthma, a heart condition, diabetes, or any other physical limitation or illness must bring a doctor’s note outlining the modifications that are needed for a daily physical education routine.

Students are not to have any medication in their possession, including non-prescription medications. If it is necessary for a student to take medication during school hours, obtain the Request for Medication form from the front office. The forms are to be returned to the nurse with the medicine in the prescription bottle. Medicine will be administered according to the physician’s directions.

We believe every student’s voice matters and no one should ever feel alone, please reach out on your own behalf or someone else’s, because we care and are here to help you. We have a full time Mental Health Specialist available to support parents and students. The District also provides school-based mental health/ wellness services and resources www.iusd.org/WeCare or https://iusd.org/department/mental-health-wellness to students and families. These services include short-term individual or group counseling for students at the school site; short-term, solution- focused therapy for students and families through the Irvine Family Resource Center; and resource linkages to community-based mental health or social services for students and families. Services are provided by counselors or licensed mental health professionals.

Irvine Unified School District and South Lake Middle School are dedicated to having a positive impact every day on the lives of our students. Hate motivated incidents have no place in our society. South Lake is committed to developing, implementing, and refining our practices to provide an equitable experience for students and to promote culturally responsiveness. Please read more about IUSD’s resolution Proclaiming that Black Lives Matter and Calling for a Commitment to Creating an Unbiased and Inclusive Society through Education certified on June 23rd, 2020.

If your child requires the use of crutches or other mobility assistance devices a medical note of clearance is required to return to the school setting. Please refer to IUSD’s “Crutches or Other Mobility Assistance Device Procedural Protocol” for more information.

The school provides Chromebooks, textbooks, and other school- issued materials to students. These items are the student’s responsibility. Students are expected to keep these items in good working condition, bring Chromebooks to school fully charged each day, and always know the whereabouts of any items checked out to them. Students will be issued a charger with their Chromebook. Chargers are expected to be returned with Chromebooks at the end of the student’s 8th grade year. Chromebooks returned without a charger will result in a fine. Replacement chargers will not be accepted as a payment method. Loaner Chromebooks will not be provided to students via the library – it is the student’s responsibility to bring their Chromebook to school for use each day.

Students are responsible for reporting lost Chromebooks to the library immediately. The school is not responsible for tracking lost or misplaced items. Chromebooks are the property of the district – students should not place stickers or draw on school issued Chromebooks. Items should not be shared with others, as students are responsible for everything that is checked out in their name including any damages, whether done by the student or not. If an item has preexisting damage, it must be reported to the library within three days of checkout. If a Chromebook or other resource is lost or damaged, a fine will be assessed—with no exceptions or excuses. Students are responsible for paying the fine that is assessed – no replacement items will be accepted. Chromebook insurance is available through IUSD to help cover accidental damage or repairs, and we strongly encourage families to consider this option. Insurance does not cover any damage that is considered intentionally done. Intentional damage will result in fines and the student will be held fully responsible.

Students are not permitted to use their own devices/computer at school. All students are issued an IUSD Chromebook. We use Blocksi for monitoring student access. Parent/Guardians are able to create a Blocksi account to view their student’s activity. Students are not permitted to use Chromebooks during break or lunch. Chromebooks are to be used only in the classroom for academic purposes.
