Work Habits & Citizenship

At South Lake Middle School, we value not only the academic development of our students, we also strive to build the social emotional competencies and behaviors that will contribute to them being well-rounded and productive citizens.  As such, we have defined what behaviors our students will exhibit that will not only contribute to their academic success, but will also positively impact our school community.

These behaviors fall into two categories: Work Habits and Citizenship. When reporting on behaviors in our report cards, we will be communicating the frequency with which each teacher observes the desired work habits and citizenship behaviors in the classroom using a proficiency rating scale. Please see the chart below for the definition of each category and essential skills we will be partnering with our students to develop.

In addition to the rating scale, your child’s teacher may include specific comments on behavior such as, “CIT - Communicates thoughts and ideas effectively,” (a citizenship comment) or, “WH - Needs to demonstrate more effective time management,” (a work habits comment). It is important to emphasize these skills as much as you do with final course marks. Middle school is a critical time for students to develop positive work habits to carry through secondary and post-secondary education.
