Good Afternoon South Lake Families,

We are approaching the last week of Trimester 2 which is an ideal time to review some strategies to help your child grow or refine their executive functioning skills. As middle schoolers grow, developing strong executive functioning skills is essential for their academic success and independence. These skills—such as organization, time management, and self-regulation—help students plan, prioritize, and complete tasks effectively. Creating a consistent routine at home, including a dedicated study space and regular homework time, supports focus and reduces procrastination. Encouraging your child to use their Planner will strengthen their ability to track assignments, assessments, and deadlines. Additionally, fostering a growth mindset by emphasizing effort and perseverance helps students develop cognitive flexibility, allowing them to adapt to challenges and setbacks.

Another key aspect of executive functioning is breaking larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. When studying for a test or completing a long-term project, encourage your child to set specific, achievable goals and use strategies like checklists or graphic organizers. Self-monitoring is also important—helping students reflect on what strategies work best for them and when they need to ask for help fosters independence and problem-solving skills. By reinforcing these habits at home, parents play a vital role in supporting the executive functioning development that leads to long-term success.

Your student will be getting marks for Work Habits and Citizenship. Since we removed these from students’ academic grades, we trust you will place as much emphasis on these as we do! Here are the expectations we have for students which are reviewed and published in our Planner.

Let’s finish the trimester strong Sharks!

PTSA - COLOR RUN: FINAL UPDATE
Saying we’re EXCEPTIONALLY PROUD of our South Lake Sharks and community doesn't even begin to capture it. Words like Incredible, Amazing, Spectacular, Remarkable, Phenomenal, and Awesome only start to scratch the surface when describing our students, teachers, and staff! We rallied together, crushed our fundraising goal, shared countless smiles and laughs, and made history - together! We are truly Better Together!

We more than doubled our previous fundraising efforts, setting an all-time record! Whether you donated, shared our fundraising link, participated in company matches, or cheered on our Sharks from afar…THANK YOU! The memories we created leading up to, and on the day of, the Color Run will always be at the top of our list. The dedication and hard work from our students, staff, and the entire Shark community to get so close to our fundraising goal shows just how strong our close-knit community is - and how much we can accomplish when we come together.

Attendance Matters
As we move through the school year, I want to emphasize the crucial role that regular attendance plays in your student’s success. Every day of learning matters, and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in achieving strong academic outcomes and fostering a sense of belonging at school. Here’s why:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and assignments, leading to better grades and a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Building Positive Habits: Consistent attendance helps students develop responsibility, time management, and perseverance—skills they will carry with them long after middle school.
  • Social Connections: Being in school allows students to participate fully in group work, social activities, and extracurriculars that are vital for their emotional and social growth.
  • Strong Foundations for Future Success: Studies show that students with high attendance rates are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education or career opportunities with confidence.

We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. However, I encourage you to do your best to schedule appointments, vacations, and other non-urgent activities outside of the school day to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.

For more information regarding the program visit: OCbus.com/YouthRideFree.  OC Connect is another option for students. This is a free shuttle service that runs every 20 minutes between the northern end of Irvine and the Irvine Train Station.  This route drops off at Woodbridge High which is a short walk from here. The IrvineCONNECT webpage may be accessed through this link:  https://www.cityofirvine.org/transportation/irvine-connect. On the webpage there is a link to track the shuttles in real time, which can be used in a similar way to watching for an Uber to see how far out it is.
