South Lake Newsletter - April 12, 2024

Good Afternoon South Lake Community,

As we are approaching the last eight weeks of school, I want to take a moment to emphasize how critical it is for your student to attend school regularly. We are nearing the end of essential instructional and will be participating in statewide testing later this month. Our teachers are working tirelessly to prepare our students for these assessments, ensuring students are meeting mastery of vital learning targets necessary for moving forward to the next grade level, and making placement decisions for courses. The chart below illustrates the impact of chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year, which equates to 18 days/period absences. Should you need to schedule appointments, we encourage you to make these after school or on the weekends. We understand that there are situations that cannot be avoided, however, attending school is a priority. Should your student have to miss school, our teachers make all their lessons available on Canvas or Google Classroom. At this point of the year, your student is highly proficient in this process and does need to spend time at home completing their missed assignments. Should you have specific questions or need additional support for you student to regularly attend, please contact our front office or counselors at any time. Thank you!

For our 8th grade families, please see what is quickly approaching:
  • Course recommendations for ELA and History are live on Aeries to use for high school course registration.
  • Woodbridge High School will be at South Lake on Monday, April 15th to register students for their courses, students must bring their packet with them filled out.
  • University and Irvine High School registration for courses occur online – these schools are sending out information about this directly to you.
  • Purchase Knott’s Berry Farm Ticket (information below) by May 1st for your student to be able to attend.
Lastly, please note the schedule for next week. We have Super Late Start on Wednesday, April 17th, as we will be hosting our incoming 7th grade students for their orientation to South Lake. School begins at 9:45am and ends at 3:02pm.

Have a great weekend Sharks!
In kindness,
Belinda Averill

Middle School Program (MSP) at South Lake
If you are looking for great after school activities for your students, there are several events and classes to get involved with through our Middle School Programs hosted by the city of Irvine. Please contact Site Coordinator Karley Abeyrama at (949) 724-7190 or at KAbeyrama@cityofirvine.org for information.    Paper – Free Tutoring
As your student is getting going with their academics, please know that IUSD offers Paper Tutoring, a free resource, giving your student 24/7 access to chat with tutors for live help and assignment support. Paper helps parents and guardians avoid the cost, time, and stress of having to relearn geometry and poetry or hire a private tutor to help their child with classwork. Paper can provide support with homework help, writing feedback (i.e. editing essays), and study support. Help is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Students can access Paper Tutoring directly from their class Canvas Page. Some additional resources are this informational video on Paper TutoringPaper for Parents & Guardians and Paper Website: Unlimited Tutoring, Anywhere & Anytime.

Student Attendance
It is important to make every effort to have your student in school and on time. While attendance and success in school are positively correlated and directly linked, there are times when a student should stay home and absences are necessary.
  • Illness - Please keep student home when they have several signs and symptoms of illness including a fever (temp > 100.4).
  • Mental health – a new California law states that absences for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health shall be excused (Ed Code 48205)After 5 absences, a doctor’s note will be required.
  • Doctor appointments
  • Court appointments
  • Funerals for immediate family members
We want to honor and support the mental and physical health of our students, and we also need to prioritize the importance of attendance both for student success and to ensure that IUSD receives critically important state funding for our schools. Please know that the School Attendance Review Board (SARB process) will be initiated, when a student accumulates 3 unexcused absences or truancies. If you have concerns about extended absences or if you have any questions about attendance, please don’t hesitate to call. We appreciate your partnership in supporting the health, happiness, and academic achievement of our students.
