Good Afternoon South Lake Community, Carter G. Woodson is considered the founder of Black History Month, honored throughout the month of February. Through our partnership with Middle School Program with the City of Irvine, MSP Counselors will be taking our students back through time to learn about Black Foundations of Pop on Tuesday. Learn more about Black History Month from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Learning for Justice. The celebrations of African American Pioneers, voices and stories go beyond this month as is our commitment to social justice education. If you are looking to extend at home, Adolescent Literacy and Center for Racial Justice in Education contain a wide range of resources to use. We are in the midst of ASB elections where we have a record number of 7th grade students running for one of the five officer positions. It is wonderful to have so many students want to get involved with this leadership class. We also have our first VEX Robotics team qualify for state finals. They will be competing in San Diego in March. Lastly, the trimester is ending March 1st, it’s a good time to check in with your students about finishing their trimester strong. For our 8th graders, the transition to high school is just around the corner. Please make sure to save the date for 8th Grade Family Night on April. This is an important evening to attend with you 8th grader, more information will be coming soon. Have a great long weekend Sharks…reminder that there is no school for students tomorrow and Monday. In kindness, Belinda Averill Principal |

As your student is getting going with their academics, please know that IUSD offers Paper Tutoring, a free resource, giving your student 24/7 access to chat with tutors for live help and assignment support. Paper helps parents and guardians avoid the cost, time, and stress of having to relearn geometry and poetry or hire a private tutor to help their child with classwork. Paper can provide support with homework help, writing feedback (i.e. editing essays), and study support. Help is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Students can access Paper Tutoring directly from their class Canvas Page. Some additional resources are this informational video on Paper Tutoring: Paper for Parents & Guardians and Paper Website: Unlimited Tutoring, Anywhere & Anytime. Student Attendance It is important to make every effort to have your student in school and on time. While attendance and success in school are positively correlated and directly linked, there are times when a student should stay home and absences are necessary.
