Hello South Lake Community, September is Suicide Prevention Month. We have lunchtime activities planned the last week of September that focus on the importance of identifying trusted adults, establishing caring friendships, and increasing emotional support hotlines awareness. We all have a role to play in creating healthy communities. For caregivers it can be tricky navigating a conversation around this topic, here is helpful guide should your student or a loved one need support: Suicide Prevention Parent Tool. If you are interested in learning more about the topic of suicide prevention, the CDC recognizes it as a public health issue and created this detailed resource that outlines examples of what we can do as a society to prevent it. IUSD partners with Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), a national nonprofit organization with a mission to create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through its life-saving, evidence-informed Know the Signs prevention programs like Say Something, SHP educates and empowers youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. Each year in schools and communities across the United States, there are millions of youth who hurt themselves or others through verbal, physical and digital means. These behaviors can cause youth to experience emotional trauma and physical injury, mental health or wellness issues, stress or anxiety, and/or feelings of being unsafe. Later this month, we will be teaching students about Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS) to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, of individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others, and to use SS-ARS before it is too late. Our staff will also be participating in our Annual Intruder Training with Irvine Police Department later this month. In this training, we review how to identify warning signs and signals, best practices in the event of an intruder and how to support students in this process. We have reviewed safety procedures and processes with students over the past few weeks and have practiced an evacuation and lockdown. Please reinforce our teachings with your student about the importance of speaking up…thank you! On a lighter note...ASB is holding our first Spirit Week next week...we'd love to see all our Sharks showing their school spirit! Keep in mind that we have stairs on campus so students must be able to carry their Anything But a Backpack up and down stairs. Have a wonderful weekend…it’s a great day to be a Shark! Be well, Belinda Averill Principal |

We want to honor and support the mental and physical health of our students, and we also need to prioritize the importance of attendance both for student success and to ensure that IUSD receives critically important state funding for our schools. Please know that the School Attendance Review Board (SARB process) will be initiated, when a student accumulates 3 unexcused absences or truancies. If you have concerns about extended absences or if you have any questions about attendance, please don’t hesitate to call.
